EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — The Edwardsville City Council covered significant ground during its regular Tuesday meeting on May 19, checking off a slate of critical infrastructure funding measures while celebrating community leaders ahead of the summer festival season.

Aldermen greenlight public water loans, honor local police officer, and gear up for a busy summer event season.

In a unanimous vote, the council fast-tracked an ordinance authorizing the city to borrow funds from the Public Water Supply Loan Program. The suspension of the standard rules allowed the council to pass the measure on its first reading, signaling a priority to secure and maintain the city's vital water infrastructure.

The council also tied up a costly administrative loose end regarding the Holyoake Reconstruction project. Aldermen voted to officially correct the contract amount awarded to Gelly Excavating & Construction. The newly approved total of $2,526,099.36 fixes a transposition error from the May 4 meeting, which initially understated the multi-million dollar contract by exactly $270,000.

Beyond budget and infrastructure, the meeting highlighted the outstanding public service of the city’s law enforcement. Mayor Art Risavy presented the Employee Excellence Award to Officer Ayden Brewer. According to a citizen nomination submitted by local resident Monica Schwarz, Officer Brewer demonstrated exceptional professionalism, kindness, and patience while helping her navigate a stressful case of identity theft and bank fraud.

In other business, the council approved a liquor license bond for Suhas Mandavalli of the Foundry Public House, located on North Main Street, and appointed Terri Dalla Riva to the Plan Commission for a term ending in April 2030.

The meeting closed with a look ahead to a bustling weekend in Edwardsville. Communications Coordinator Cathy Hensley reminded residents of several high-profile upcoming events, including the GlenEd Pantry Groundbreaking, Bonifest on Friday and Saturday, the Goshen Market, and the kickoff of the summer Symphony concerts on Sunday.
